Artist Statement

When I think of “Light” I think of the core of a person. Light lives in the moments where we experience our authentic selves. For me, this happens when I lose my inhibitions and trust the process of being with something at that very moment. “Light” is an expression of our truest nature, embodying and accepting all that comes wrapped in us.

For one of the first times since I began painting, I allowed the act itself to guide me. I decided to let go of artistic reason and began to use mediums that may not take to each other. The powder pigments weren’t absorbing the acrylic and the oil wanted nothing to do with either. I felt committed to making it work, believing there was a way for this process to match its metaphor.

In the painting The Stars Began to Burn, there is negative space that is used to frame the “light”. The soft yellows from an earthy powder pigment juxtaposed with the permanent black ink create a gentle yet chaotic atmosphere that hints there cannot be light without dark.
